BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Southern University football head coach Marshall Faulk confirmed star defensive end Ckelby Givens is eligible to play in Saturday's season opener against the Alabama State University Hornets.
"My understanding is Ckelby is in with that group of guys that vowed to stay in the state of Louisiana and I believe with that, as that stay is, it allows him to play until something else is said. We're looking for guidance from the NCAA or the lawmakers to tell us by Friday what we are to do and [I'm going to] follow the law. The law says that he can play and we're happy to have him."
Faulk said Givens' work ethic has impacted younger players on the team as he helps to coach them and, in turn, suits up to play hard on the field.
On Aug. 17, Givens announced his plans to return to Southern for a fifth year.
The Jags will face off against the Hornets in the SWAC Birmingham Classic starting at 2 p.m.
