MILAN (AP) — Federico Dimarco, the talented fullback for Inter Milan, recently took home the prestigious title of best player at the Italian players’ association awards. This recognition comes on the heels of his impressive performances during the previous season, where he played a pivotal role in helping Inter secure the Serie A title with a commanding 11-point lead over Napoli.
Dimarco’s contributions on the left wing were instrumental, showcasing his ability to venture forward and create scoring opportunities. His standout season had already earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award from Serie A in May, underscoring his impact on the pitch.
Despite the accolades, Dimarco expressed disappointment regarding his contract situation during the awards ceremony held at the iconic La Scala theater. With his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, he revealed, “We haven’t discussed it yet. I was hoping that would happen after last season.” This uncertainty looms over his future at the club, which he has been a part of since his youth.
In a significant development for Inter, the club announced the departure of longtime sporting director Piero Ausilio, replacing him with Dario Baccin. Dimarco admitted he was taken aback by the news, stating, “I wasn’t expecting that. I read about it after training. (Ausilio) is someone who I have a relationship with. We won a lot together.” This change in management could influence the club's direction as they look to build on their recent successes.
When questioned about reports linking him to a potential move to Barcelona, Dimarco remained steadfast in his loyalty to Inter. “It’s always nice to be mentioned alongside these great clubs. But you know my history with Inter. I grew up here,” he remarked, highlighting his deep-rooted connection to the team. After several years spent on loan, he is now in his sixth season as a key figure in Inter’s lineup.
At the gala, Dimarco was not the only Inter player to be recognized. He was joined by teammates Alessandro Bastoni and Manuel Akanji, who were also named among the league's top four defenders, while Marco Palestra, formerly of Cagliari and now with Chelsea, rounded out the group. Young talent was also celebrated, with 21-year-old Nico Paz taking home the best young player award in Serie A, and 19-year-old Mattia Liberali earning the same honor in Serie B. The goal of the season award went to Francisco Conceicao for his stunning strike for Juventus against Roma.
