Las Vegas can be a difficult place for any player to start an NFL career. It's a franchise that hasn't won a postseason game in 23 years. And, of course, Vegas is a city full of potential distractions.
Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza is well aware of what the Las Vegas Strip can be like for someone with his kind of newfound wealth. But he has no intention of finding it out for himself.
Though Mendoza has been living in the Las Vegas area since the Raiders took him with the No. 1 pick, he has made a point to avoid The Strip. His games at Allegiant Stadium will be the closest he intends to come to Vegas' tourism hub.
Like, he wasn't kidding. Here's how he described the Vegas Strip, via The Athletic:
“I’ve been there once or twice, but I haven’t really experienced the Strip,” Mendoza told me Tuesday during a lunch break at the Raiders’ training facility. “It’s like a boogeyman. A lot of people talk about the Strip like, ‘You don’t want to go there.’
“It’s like when you’re a kid; you’re trick-or-treating, and there’s the haunted house. You’re not trying to go over there.”
That's a bit dramatic. But if that is how Mendoza feels most comfortable in Las Vegas, the Raiders won't mind the approach.
