Fernando Mendoza’s highly anticipated preseason debut is in the books. The Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback played in his first NFL game on Thursday against the Cleveland Browns. He didn’t waste time proving why he deserves to be the No. 1 pick this year. Mendoza showed the he can shine in actual games and not just in practice.
The 2026 Heisman Trophy winner completed 10-of-16 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown. His passing score to wide receiver Jack Bech in the second quarter drew a huge ovation from the Allegiant Stadium crowd.

However, the Raiders lost 27-14 tp the Arizona Cardinals despite Mendoza’s solid performance.
Preseason games provide players with more reps as they prepare for the regular season. They also help rookies acclimate to the league and give them a feel of the professional game. Mendoza and Las Vegas will open its regular-season slate at home on Sept. 13 against the Miami Dolphins.

He enjoyed a historic season last year, leading the program to an undefeated record and winning its first national championship. The 22-year-old earned the Heisman Trophy after completing 273-of-379 passes for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns.
He is expected to play more snaps as the 2026 season progresses. Mendoza will serve as Kirk Cousins’ backup as the Raiders plan to ease him into the QB1 role. Learning from a veteran like Cousins will speed up his development and also lessen the pressure on him.
The good news for Las Vegas fans is Mendoza showed on Thursday that he belongs in the NFL. He gives them more to look forward to and could be the franchise’s long-term answer under center.
