TOWN AND COUNTRY, Mo. – Beginning Tuesday, the eyes of the golf world turn to Bellerive Country Club, as the BMW Championship brings an elite field to the St. Louis area golf course.
With practice rounds starting Tuesday, local businesses are already gearing up for a winning week.
After an 18-year absence, the tournament returns to Bellerive with a city ready to fill the gallery.
The BMW Championship is the pressure point of the FedExCup playoffs — the second of three postseason events. The top 50 players compete for the $20 million purse. Only 30 will advance to the PGA Tour Championship in Atlanta.
“We're expecting a little bit over 35,000 a day for the four days of the championship,”
Tournament Chairperson Ed Glotzbach said. “Saturday is already sold out.”
According to Glotzbach, Washington University in St. Louis calculated an estimated economic impact of $50 million to $60 million for the area.
Bellerive has turned into a small city, creating opportunities for vendors, service employees and local companies helping operate the event.
“A lot of the folks that help us get ready for this are small entrepreneurial-type businesses that are excited about playing a part,” Glotzbach said.
Organizers say coverage will reach 200 countries, making Bellerive a worldwide commercial for St. Louis. The longer game is exposure that could keep paying off long after the final putt.
