When many of the state’s best field hockey players came to the two Delaware Online Fall High School Sports Media Days, they did more than just pose for photos.
They also told us about some of the things their sport has taught them.
Christiana’s Charlotte Minker now knows why the whistle blows so frequently, and what happens next.
“I didn’t understand a lot of the rules that came with field hockey,” said Minker, who is going into her junior season with the Vikings. “There are a lot of penalties, and a lot of things that I wouldn’t understand from being off the field. Being a part of it really helped me understand better.”
Newark Charter’s Genevieve Walch has learned a lot about what to do when someone else is controlling the ball.
“It’s really easy to just focus on what you’re doing on ball and just try to move around the field on ball,” said Walch, who will be a senior this fall. “… But a lot of field hockey is also just moving and cutting in the pockets and getting back on defense.”

Representatives from 34 field hockey teams came to the two events, with 12 teams rolling into the Woodbrige High gym on Aug. 11 and 22 teams storming the field at Abessinio Stadium on Aug. 12.
“You see so many familiar faces,” said Brynn Ellis, a junior on the Concord field hockey team. “It’s so good to see everybody again. We’ve seen a ton of players we know, across all sports.”
Field hockey was a major part of the record 103 teams that turned out overall, as football and girls volleyball players and coaches were also invited. The events drew 37 total teams at Woodbridge, and 76 at Abessinio.
Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists served as the presenting sponsor for both events. Caruso’s Pizza and Pasta in Georgetown provided lunch at Woodbridge, while Bachetti Brothers Catering provided lunch at Abessinio.
