Megan Finnigan has spoken about her return from injury hell after the Everton Women’s skipper played her first minutes since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2025.

Featuring in a behind-closed-doors 0-0 draw with Burnley at their training ground earlier this month, the 28-year-old thankfully came through unscathed (we don’t need any more compensation claims with the Clarets) before targeting Goodison Park as the venue to end her injury journey that has claimed over 18 months of her career.

Finnigan was the focal point of the celebrations afterwards, with her Everton teammates paying tribute to the skipper, both in person and on social media, something the Liverpool-born defender was truly flattered by, as she explained.

“It was a really special day,” she said. “To be back out there with the girls, and what they did after, was a day that I’ll never forget.

“I wanted to enjoy the occasion. Friday was a huge milestone for me. My aim is to get back to the best version of myself.

“When I am back out in front of our fans at Goodison, that is when I feel like the journey is over.”

Beginning her youth career with Everton’s academy at the age of nine, Finnigan remained with the club throughout her youth career and captained the team in the 2014 FA Women’s Youth Cup final.

The former England U-21 star made first team debut in 2015, before signing her first professional contract with the Blues in July 2017.

A lifelong ambition was fulfilled on 27 September 2023, when Finnigan was named club captain of Everton ahead of the 2023–24 season as she found her true calling in the heart of defence.

Currently Everton’s longest-serving player with over 130 appearances and counting, the centre-back is no stranger to derby goals, having found the net at Anfield in consecutive seasons, including the winner in the 2023/24 campaign.
