Florida golfer Miles McConnell posts 4-stroke victory in Sunnehanna Senior Amateur

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Miles McConnell, of Tampa, Florida, won the Sunnehanna Senior Amateur Championship by four strokes after completing Wednesday’s second round at 2-over-par 72.

McConnell shot 6-under 64 in Tuesday’s opening round to finish with a two-day total 4-under-par 136 in the event featuring players age 55 and older.

On Wednesday, McConnell birdied the first hole to sit at 7-under. He later strung together consecutive birdie putts on 11, 12 and 13. McConnell had bogeys on 3, 9, 15 and 16 and a double bogey on the par-4 No. 6.

Jason Pridmore, of Ventura, California, and Robert Gerwin II, of Cincinnati, Ohio, tied for second place at even-par 140.

Pridmore combined a 3-under 67 in the first round and a 3-over 73 in the second round. Gerwin shot even-par 70 in both rounds.

Three players tied for fourth place. Michael Anderson, of Novi, Michigan, Gregory Trent, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and Doug Hanzel, of Savannah, Georgia, each finished 1-over-par 141.

Bryan Hoops, who topped the recent Golfweek National Senior Amateur rankings, was among five players tied for 10th at 3-over 143.

Hoops, of Scottsdale, Arizona, shot even-par 70 Wednesday after a 3-over round Tuesday.

He posted a six-stroke victory in the R&A Men’s Senior Amateur, also known as the British Senior Amateur, with a 10-under-par 278, including a final-round 66, on July 10 in Oxfordshire, England.

Doug Hanzel, of Savannah, Georgia, placed first in the Sunnehanna Super Senior Championship (age 65-and-over), with a 1-over-par 141. He shot 70 Wednesday.
