Florida State University (FSU) has announced that it will retire Sebastian Janikowski's No. 38 jersey during the Seminoles' season opener against the New Mexico State Aggies on August 29. This significant honor recognizes Janikowski's remarkable contributions to the FSU football program, where he played a pivotal role in the late 1990s.
Born in Poland, Janikowski moved to Florida as a teenager and quickly made a name for himself as the starting kicker for the Seminoles from 1997 to 1999. His tenure culminated in a perfect 12-0 season in 1999, leading FSU to its second national championship. Janikowski's talent was evident as he became a two-time recipient of the Lou Groza Award, which is given annually to the best kicker in college football.
During his time at Florida State, Janikowski successfully converted 66 of 83 field goal attempts and made 126 extra points. His impressive career statistics include holding the program record for career field goal percentage and ranking second with five field goals of 50 yards or more. He also ranks third in FSU history with 324 points scored and 66 made field goals, showcasing his reliability and skill as a kicker.
In 2002, Janikowski was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) 50th Anniversary Team, further solidifying his legacy within the conference.
