Former Duke forward makes controversial commitment to Kentucky

Former Duke basketball player Mark Mitchell is on to his third school, transferring to Kentucky after being granted an extra year of eligibility, according to basketball reporter Joe Tipton. While an eligibility ruling could prohibit Mitchell from suiting up with the Wildcats, if he were to play for Kentucky next season, he'd be the first player in the history of both programs to play for both Duke and Kentucky.

Mitchell, a 6'9" forward, spent his first two seasons with Duke, averaging 10.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.6 blocks in 27.8 minutes per game. Last season for Missouri, Mitchell enjoyed a breakout campaign, earning All-SEC honors for the second consecutive season after averaging 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.5 blocks.

Like many other players who have tried to return to school for an extra year of eligibility, Mitchell's decision has caused controversy. To further complicate matters, Mitchell played for the Denver Nuggets in the 2026 NBA Summer League on an Exhibit 10, non-guaranteed contract. In four contests for Denver, Mitchell averaged 4.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.3 assists.
