Former Texas A&M RB shines as Lions’ preseason Player of the Game

Texas A&M players have been busy throughout the preseason, each fighting for a roster spot in their own way. Some former Aggies are already on Hall of Fame trajectories, others are rookies trying to find their footing, and plenty fall somewhere in between.

One player who has worked to carve out a steady NFL career is former Aggie running back Trayveon Williams. During his time in College Station, Williams became one of the most productive backs in program history, finishing with 3,615 rushing yards, a 6.0 yards‑per‑carry average, and 34 rushing touchdowns, plus 561 receiving yards and another score.

His breakout junior season cemented his legacy. Williams rushed for 1,760 yards and 18 touchdowns, breaking Texas A&M’s single‑season records for both rushing and all‑purpose yards. His performance earned him Doak Walker Award semifinalist honors, First‑Team All‑SEC, and Second‑Team All‑American recognition before he declared early for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Selected in the sixth round by the Cincinnati Bengals, Williams saw action in every game as a rookie and remained with the team through 2023 in a reserve or practice‑squad role. After brief stints with multiple teams, he signed with the Detroit Lions in August and despite being a long shot for the 53‑man roster, he showed he still has juice.

In the Lions’ preseason matchup against the Washington Commanders, Williams was named Player of the Game, totaling 60 yards on 11 touches and scoring a touchdown. Considering he joined the team just a week earlier, it was an impressive showing that should earn him more looks whether in Detroit or elsewhere around the league.
