Fans only need to wait 23 more days until the Steel City brand of football returns when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Atlanta Falcons on September 13. In the spirit of the countdown to kickoff, we'll take a look at the most recent and best players to ever wear No. 23.

The Steelers have two players currently wearing No. 23 on their roster: wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James and third-round rookie cornerback Daylen Everette.

Last 5 Steelers to wear No. 23
  • Jakobie Keeney-James, 2026-present
  • Daylen Everette, 2026-present
  • Darius Slay, 2025
  • Tre Flowers, 2025
  • Damontae Kazee, 2022-2024
Best No. 23 in Steelers history: S Mike Wagner

When it comes to No. 23, there's no better wearer in Steelers history than safety Mike Wagner.

Wagner, who was selected by Pittsburgh with the 268th overall pick in the 11th round of the 1971 NFL Draft, played a huge role on the legendary Steel Curtain defense alongside fellow safety Donnie Shell.

During his ten years with the Steelers, Wagner was responsible for 36 interceptions, the sixth-most by a Steeler all time, while also winning four Super Bowls.

Wagner was named to two Pro Bowls, earned First-Team All-Pro honors once, and earned Second-Team All-Pro honors once. He was also celebrated as part of the Pittsburgh Steelers 50th Anniversary Team and the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor.

The NFL interceptions co-leader in 1973, Wagner is without a doubt the greatest No. 23 in franchise history.
