Frances Tiafoe has advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 Cincinnati Open, moving a step closer to winning his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title. Following his impressive victory, the American encountered an issue that forced him to race out of his post-match press conference.
Frances Tiafoe Apologizes as Cramps Disrupt Cincinnati Open Press ConferenceTiafoe has produced a stellar campaign at the Cincinnati Open, beating Lorenzo Sonego, Learner Tien, and Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the quarterfinals. In a closely contested quarterfinal battle, the American bounced back after squandering a match point to claim a 7-6(2), 7-5 victory over Lorenzo Musetti and book a spot in the final four.
During his post-match press conference, Tiafoe revealed that he had been uncertain about competing at the ATP Masters 1000 event after undergoing surgery to have a cyst removed from his hand. The 28-year-old was then forced to interrupt his remarks as he struggled with cramps, issuing an apology before concluding his answer.
“I didn’t think I was going to play here. I didn’t think I was going to play here. I was kind of just getting ready for the Open. [Expletive], sorry guys. I’m cramping. [Expletive]. So yeah, I was doing that and then… and then luckily it turned out pretty well, and obviously I’m in the semi. [Expletive],” Tiafoe said.
Tiafoe also briefly addressed his expectations for his all-American semifinal against Brandon Nakashima before rushing back to the locker room to deal with the cramps.
“I expect some good serving. I expect a guy who knows me pretty well in Wayne. So, all the best. Thank guys, sorry. [Expletive] [rushes back to locker room],” he said.
Tiafoe will head into his semifinal clash against Nakashima with a major advantage, as he boasts a 6-1 lead in their head-to-head record. He also claimed a 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-4 victory over Nakashima in their most recent encounter at the Mexican Open in February.
If Frances Tiafoe extends his winning record against Brandon Nakashima and advances to the Cincinnati Open final, he will face the winner of the match between Arthur Fils and Flavio Cobolli in a blockbuster title clash.
