In a heartwarming initiative aimed at promoting physical activity among children, former boxing world champion Frank Bruno has recently distributed free footballs to local parks in Essex and Bedfordshire. The 64-year-old sports icon delivered ten footballs to Southchurch Park in Southend-on-Sea and the nearby village of Hockley, as part of a campaign by the non-profit organization Found Football.
Ritchie Beckett, the director of Found Football, expressed his enthusiasm for Bruno's involvement, stating that it elevates the initiative significantly and he hopes to expand its reach nationwide in the future. Beckett, a 44-year-old father from Stockport, believes that providing children with access to footballs can help divert them from engaging in potentially harmful activities.
Bruno himself took to social media to share his hopes for the initiative, emphasizing that even a simple game of football can steer children away from negative influences. "If a small game of football between a few people means they won’t be up to other things in the park, it gets my thumbs up," said the former WBC heavyweight champion.
The concept behind Found Football originated years ago when Beckett envisioned filling a football pitch with thousands of footballs for local communities to discover. The footballs are supplied at near-cost prices by a partnering company, with funding sourced from a combination of advertisements and donations. Beckett acknowledges that modern technology has made it more challenging to encourage children to exercise but remains optimistic that this initiative can make a meaningful impact.
He noted, "Everyone talks about the scientist who gets his first telescope at Christmas... and that’s the journey. Sometimes with a football, that’s all it takes. Somebody picks up a ball, in 20 years, they could be representing their country. You just never know." The initiative is designed to be accessible, with no barriers to participation; children can simply pick up a ball and start playing.
Found Football's most significant distribution to date occurred last week when 100 footballs were dropped on a pitch in Stockport. Beckett has committed to delivering another 100 footballs to Essex by the end of September. The movement has garnered support from notable figures, including former Premier League footballer Danny Pugh and ex-Lioness Amanda Barr.
In addition to his work in Essex, Bruno has also made deliveries in parks across Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire. Beckett praised Bruno's willingness to support the cause, stating, "It just shows why he’s a national treasure because he could have ignored the messages. I’m sure he gets lots of weird and wonderful requests." This initiative not only aims to inspire children to engage in sports but also highlights the importance of community involvement in fostering a healthier lifestyle.
