There are still some intriguing veteran options on the NFL free-agent market, even though it's already the end of August and the regular season is almost starting.
It seems like the New England Patriots can certainly benefit from that, too, as reports indicate they're interested in improving. With Mike Vrabel recently saying New England isn't where it needs to be in terms of depth, bringing in proven veterans the Patriots can call on at any moment might not be a bad idea.
One option was recently floated in Bobby Wagner.
Wagner, a likely future Hall of Famer, is 36 years old and obviously isn't the same player that he once was.
However, the longtime linebacker is very well respected in this league and would be an intriguing fit for what Mike Vrabel wants to do. A six-time First-Team All-Pro, Super Bowl champion in 2013 with the Seattle Seahawks, and a 10-time Pro Bowler, Wagner would at least give the Patriots a player who everybody knows can come in and not be a negative.
“Some big names who fit the Patriots’ needs are edge rushers Joey Bosa and Haason Reddick and linebacker Bobby Wagner.
“None of them would be long-term fixes to the team’s problems, but they could be enticed by a one-year deal to play for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. They’ve already gone down that road, albeit with a lesser name, signing veteran guard Greg Van Roten last week with the hope of using him as the first interior offensive lineman off the bench,” Chad Graff wrote.
Wagner last played with the Washington Commanders in 2025, finishing with 162 tackles in his 17 starts.
He also added 4.5 sacks, the most he's had since 2022. If that's the type of production New England can get, there are far worse options out there for them to pursue.
