Geneva High School is on the verge of a significant transformation as it prepares to break ground on a new athletic complex. Scheduled to begin construction at the end of September, this ambitious project aims to enhance the school's sports facilities and provide a dedicated venue for athletic contests.
District Superintendent Paul Lombardo announced that the goal is to complete the construction by June 2027, with hopes of hosting the first game at the new stadium shortly thereafter. The new facility will feature a state-of-the-art turf field, seating for 1,300 fans, a press box, lighting, and an eight-lane track, marking a substantial upgrade to the current athletic offerings.
Lombardo expressed excitement over the project, noting its potential impact on the community. He stated, "I think it’s monumental. It will have an impact on the community. People who went here or live here are excited, not just for sports, but the band and other activities." This sentiment reflects the broader enthusiasm within the community as they anticipate the benefits of a modern athletic complex.
As construction begins, Lombardo assured that access to the school would remain largely unaffected, with the East and West entrances still open to the public. While the plan is to host events at the new facility starting next season, he acknowledged that adjustments may be necessary depending on the construction timeline.
This year marks the final season for Geneva High School's partnership with SPIRE Academy for hosting events like football, soccer, and track and field. Lombardo mentioned the need to negotiate a new contract for swimming and winter track, expressing gratitude for SPIRE's collaboration over the years.
GHS Athletic Director Jen Crossley shared her personal connection to the project, stating, "As an alum, this project is especially meaningful to me because I remember what it was like to be a student and an athlete here." She emphasized that the new stadium represents more than just a facility; it is an investment in students and the community, aiming to create a space where families can gather and students can forge lasting memories.
Geneva School Board President Michele Krieg echoed this sentiment, highlighting the milestone the new athletic facility represents for the district and the community. She noted that breaking ground is the culmination of a shared vision and the hard work of many dedicated individuals committed to providing the best opportunities for students.
Current Eagles football coach and Geneva graduate Don Shymske expressed his eagerness for the new home field, stating, "A place to truly call our own is something the Geneva community should be proud of. I look forward to the next stage for our school and community."
The project is being overseen by architect TDA and construction manager CT Taylor. In January, the Geneva Area City School Board approved a funding allocation of $5.75 million to support the development of the athletic facility. Krieg concluded by expressing gratitude to the community and all stakeholders involved, stating, "We cannot wait to see our students take the field on their home campus."
