The Dallas Cowboys lucked themselves into Caleb Downs during the 2026 NFL Draft, a fortunate reality that many weren't expecting.
It seemed like a foregone conclusion that the New York Giants would select Downs, but they didn't, and to make matters worse, he ended up with arguably the biggest rival of New York.
As Downs gets used to playing in the NFL and in his first training camp, everything suggests that not only is he an above-average player, but he also has a chance to be an elite one right away. Recently speaking to reporters about what he's seen early on, the Cowboys head coach had nothing but great things to say about the young man.
"He's doing great," Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer told Zachary Rotman. "For a rookie, so instinctive, doesn't repeat mistakes. When you can play right away as a freshman at Alabama for Nick Saban, you've got some intelligence about you."
It's only training camp, but everything we've seen on video and in reports indicates that Downs is already an above-average player with a chance to be a superstar in the near future.
Schottenheimer saying the things he does about Nick Saban also shows how people view him around the league, as doing what he's done throughout his career, even if it was only in college early on, suggests that he has a bright future in the NFL.
