Grace Xu, a talented golfer from Montverde Academy in Florida, is back on the course after a challenging sophomore season that was marred by a back injury. The young athlete, originally from Shanghai, China, began her golf journey at the age of seven, initially inspired by her older brother. Although her first experiences were on a simulator, Xu quickly fell in love with the sport, particularly enjoying the outdoor aspects and the unique challenges presented by different golf courses.

During her freshman year, Xu made a significant impact on the Montverde Academy golf team, leading them to their first Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Girls Golf State Championship. In a remarkable performance, she set a new record for the lowest single-round score in the event's history with a stunning 62 (-9) in the opening round. Xu maintained her impressive form by finishing the tournament with a two-round total of 131, securing the title for both herself and her team.

Her achievements earned her the prestigious title of 2024 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Golf, a recognition that highlighted her exceptional talent and potential. However, the momentum she built during her freshman year came to a halt when she sustained a back injury, which forced her to sit out the entirety of her sophomore season. Despite being healed by the time the FHSAA postseason arrived, she was ineligible to compete due to her absence from the regular season.

Reflecting on her time away from the sport, Xu expressed disappointment over missing the opportunity to contribute to her team. "It was very disappointing because I really wanted to play for the team," she stated. The experience of watching her teammates compete from the sidelines added a layer of anxiety, as she felt a strong desire for their success. "When I watch them play, I get more excited and sometimes more nervous because I want them to win every single time," she noted.

In a strategic move to maximize her high school golf experience, Xu decided to reclassify from the 2028 class to the 2027 class. This decision allows her to compete at a higher level and gain valuable insights from various competitions. As she embarks on her senior year, Xu is eager to make the most of her time on the course and is focused on finishing her high school career on a high note.

"This year, I’ve played so many golf tournaments individually already, so I feel like I’m pretty prepared," she remarked. With a renewed sense of confidence, Xu is excited to reunite with her teammates and aims to achieve her goal of winning the state championship this season. Her journey back to competitive golf not only signifies her resilience but also her commitment to excelling in the sport she loves.
