Manchester City and Arsenal are set to do battle again in the 2026/27 season.
After the heartbreak of three consecutive second-place finishes in the Premier League, the first two behind City, Mikel Arteta's side ended the club's 22-year wait for a league title.
Arsenal are many people's favorites to go back-to-back, but City – now under Enzo Maresca after the end of the Pep Guardiola era – can put down an early marker when the sides meet in Sunday's Community Shield in Cardiff.
But this modern joust for honours is only part of the story for two clubs whose trophy-winning exploits stretch back more than a century.

Have Arsenal or Man City won more trophies? When it comes to major trophies, Arsenal and Manchester City are fairly closely matched, with the Gunners better off by the slender margin of 32 to 31.
While Arsenal have been the longer-standing major English club throughout the history of the sport, City's 1904 FA Cup success is the earliest entry to either team's trophy cabinet, and the Manchester club's 21st-century surge into the global elite has chewed up a once sizeable gap.
Arsenal vs. Man City league titlesArsenal's Premier League success in 2025/26 moved them on to 14 overall, third in the all-time English standings behind Liverpool and Manchester United (both 20).
Manchester City are next on the historical rundown with 10 titles, eight of which they have won during the Premier League era.
City also jointly hold the record for the most second division titles in English football history (seven) alongside Leicester City. However, these promotion-winning feats do not count as major honours.
Arsenal vs. Man City cup competitionsThe 2026 League Cup final was only the second meeting between Arsenal and City in a major final.
This previous meeting came in the 2018 League Cup, when City topped Arsenal 3-0 thanks to goals from club icons Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, and David Silva.
City's nine League Cup wins to Arsenal's two serve to close up the domestic tallies.
Despite sharing a total of 22 FA Cup titles between them (14 for Arsenal, 8 for City), the two clubs have never met in the FA Cup final.
Arsenal are the most successful team of all time in the world's oldest cup competition with 14 titles. City's 2026 FA Cup final win over Chelsea was their eighth triumph.
Either Arsenal or City will add to their 17 or seven Community Shield successes in 2026, although these are not typically considered major honours.

Both teams have one success apiece - City in 1969/70 and Arsenal in 1993/94 - in the now-defunct European Cup Winners' Cup.
Arsenal and Manchester City have never faced off in European play across any of the UEFA competitions.
It is not rare for teams from the same country to never square off in European competition, as UEFA rules restrict clubs from the same federation from meeting prior to the knockout stage. For many years, these restrictions were even tighter, and have only loosened to encompass the entire knockout bracket when the 'Swiss model' was adopted for the league phase from 2024/25.
For example, the most famous rivalry in all of European football, Barcelona vs. Real Madrid known as El Clasico, has happened eight times the Champions League.
Given how new Manchester City are to the top echelon of global football, and how Arsenal have never won a European title, the two clubs never meeting in UEFA competition isn't too shocking.

As is usually the case, most of those meetings have come in Premier League/Division One play, where the same disparity sits.
In FA Cup action, Arsenal have also gotten the better of City in more games, winning four of their all-time matchups, suffering defeat twice. It's nearly dead even in the League Cup, where Arsenal have won five and lost four, with one match drawn.
