The Miami Heat have had a very interesting offseason, especially considering how they started the summer. The offseason began with a blockbuster trade that sent Milwaukee Bucks franchise superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami.
However, since that move, the Heat have not landed another major addition in free agency. Their latest miss came with Bradley Beal, who agreed to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers.
“Free agent guard Bradley Beal has agreed to a two-year, $13.2 million deal to return to the LA Clippers, his representative, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, told ESPN on Thursday night. The deal includes a player option in the second season,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.
Miami is in desperate need of shooting, especially with Antetokounmpo expected to lead the offense. For quite some time, the Heat have been interested in four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson.
“If the Mavericks don’t find a trade for Klay Thompson, his representation will likely request a buyout. There appears to be mutual interest between the Heat and Thompson, who could maximize his shooting alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, plus potentially LeBron James,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
The Heat have done what they can this summer, but they know they need to add another piece if they want to truly contend. The Stein Line’s Marc Stein reported that Miami remains in an excellent position to land Thompson.
“Miami continues to sit at the front of the line of teams hoping that Dallas buys out Klay Thompson,” Stein wrote.
This is great news for the Heat, as they appear to be in a prime position to acquire one of the greatest shooters in NBA history. Thompson is also a future Hall of Famer, and pairing him with Antetokounmpo could give Miami a lethal offensive combination.
Miami has missed out on several targets this summer, so it is about time the team makes another big splash, and Thompson could very well be that move. Things can always change, but for now, Thompson joining the Heat appears to be a very real possibility.
