  • For the final 30 minutes, Bayern Munich played exclusively with players who are pegged for the senior squad this season, including Bara Sapoko Ndiaye. The pace of play immediately picked up and those players showed the massive gap between themselves and the youngsters that played the first half.
  • Nathaniel Brown has looked incrementally more comfortable in each Bayern friendly. He will form a nice 1-2 punch with Alphonso Davies, providing Luis Díaz an embarrassment of riches on the left flank.
  • Hiroki Itō played a clean 90 minutes, completing 97% of his passes and winning nearly every challenge in his space.
  • Vincent Kompany said the priority in today’s friendly was to avoid injuries. While this technically happened, Jamal Musiala went straight to the ground only six minutes after he entered the match. Players and medical staff immediately rushed to him and he was able to leave the pitch under his own strength. Twice in one week causes major concerns. Fair play to the Heidenheim fans for chanting Musiala’s name in support.

Bayern heads to Dortmund this weekend for the German Super Cup. That match will be final contest before the Bundesliga opener the following Friday against Stuttgart.

FT: Bayern wins!

89’: Substitution. Filip Pavić replaces Nathaniel Brown.

83’:GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 4-2. Nathaniel Brown weaves through the box for a clever finish.

78’:GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 3-2. Michael Olise beats two defenders and sends a perfect cross to Luis Díaz for the one touch finish right in front of the keeper.

76’: Substitutions. Marko Zrilić, Adam Kölle, and Marcel Costly replace Paul Hennrich, Julian Niehues, and Patrick Mainka.

71’: Substitutions. Marvin Pieringer, Budu Zivzivadze, and Leart Paqarada replace Maximilian Breunig, Mikkel Kaufmann, Marnon Busch.

69’: Substitution. Cassiano Kiala replaces Jamal Musiala. Musiala jogs off under his own strength but it was another scary moment.

61’: Substitutions. Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Luis Díaz, Jamal Musiala, Jonathan Tah, Josip Stanišić and Aleksandar Pavlović replace Arijon Ibrahimović, Tim Binder, Maycon Cardozo, Ismael Saibari, Kim Min-jae, Felipe Chávez and Sacha Boey.

58’: Substitutions. Jan Schöppner and Mathias Honsak replace Luca Kerber and Yannik Wagner.

48’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern tied 2-2. Tim Binder fights his way through three defenders to earn a penalty kick. Arijon Ibrahimović places it well into low corner despite the keeper guessing correctly.

46’: Substitutions. Nathaniel Brown replaces Alphonso Davies. Tim Siersleben and Oualid Mhamdi replace Benedikt Gimber and Jonas Föhrenbach.

Halftime Observations
  • Vincent Kompany fielded a Bayern Munich II front six and the lack of cohesion and chemistry shone brightly. The individual talent is apparent but Bayern struggled to break down Heidenheim in the final third.
  • Felipe Chávez and Maycon Cardozo have been playing outside this summer but were thrust into the central midfield. An interesting experiment in a throwaway game but unlikely that it yields any long-term results.
  • It is cool to see Alphonso Davies rocking the captain’s armband. It is not cool to see him lacking involvement in the game because Heidenheim is abusing Bayern’s right flank. We just want to see Davies track someone down from a crazy distance and not pull up injured.
  • Arijon Ibrahimović is having another underwhelming performance. He is clearly not a Bayern-quality player and needs to reroute his career to a midtable or relegation zone club to continue his progression.
  • 19-year old Yannik Wagner has looked fantastic. On top of the opportunistic goal that featured a smooth finish, Wagner snuck behind Sacha Boey and Dayot Upamecano on numerous occasions. Hopefully, Jürgen Klopp keeps a better eye on Wagner than Bayern’s defense has done today.

HT: Bayern down 2-1 at the break.

44’: Goal, Heidenheim. Bayern down 2-1. After failing to clear out a corner kick, Julian Niehues rips a nice volley from the top of the box.

43’: Yellow card. Tim Binder is booked on a retaliation foul. Things are getting a little physical for a friendly!

34’: Substitutions. Ismael Saibari and Kim Min-jae replace Wisdom Mike and Dayot Upamecano.

25’:GOOOAAALLL! Bayern tied 1-1. Felipe Chávez rips a free kick from the top of the box, barely beating both the outstretched keeper and the crossbar.

21’: Yellow card. Luca Kerber is booked for a foul that prevented a promising Bayern counterattack.

5’: Goal, Heidenheim. Bayern down 1-0. Bara Sapoko Ndiaye misplaces a backward ball and Yannik Wagner outruns Dayot Upamecano for an easy 1v1 finish.

1’: LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!

In a surprising move, Vincent Kompany has elected to reward the solid summer performances of his younger players with one final start. Arijon Ibrahimović, Felipe Chávez, Wisdom Mike, Bara Sapoko Ndiaye, Tim Binder, and Maycon Cardozo will be joined by a few Bayern Munich senior players who have not played much during the preseason circuit.

Bayern Munich will play the final friendly of the preseason schedule against Heidenheim. This match comes right on the heels of Saturday’s 3-1 win over RB Leipzig in the Telekom Cup. Vincent Kompany will likely be cautious with the quartet of players that exited the Leipzig game with minor injuries: Jamal Musiala, Konrad Laimer, Kim Min-jae, and Sacha Boey.

Prediction

Bayern wins 2-1. Bayern will jump out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals from Ismael Saibari and Harry Kane. The second half will feature heavy rotation and poor passing from both squads due to the mismatched pairings. Heidenheim will score on a free kick, reiterating Bayern’s struggles in that type of situation.
