Here's Where Toronto Blue Jays Are in Playoff Standings After Latest Series Win

The Toronto Blue Jays are still in the thick of playoff contention despite the disappointing way their season has progressed to this point.

The Blue Jays entered this year with legitimate World Series aspirations after winning their first American League pennant since 1993 and making it all the way to Game 7 of the World Series before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in extra innings.

Toronto has had a series of injuries and regressions that has led to the team finding itself in fourth place in the American League East entering this week's four-game series against American League East rivals, the Boston Red Sox.

The list of injuries have impacted every facet of the Blue Jays roster, especially the pitching staff. Toronto has had nine starting pitchers miss time this season, several of whom are currently out of action.

Despite these struggles, Toronto still is in thick of contention for a playoff spot in the American League. The Blue Jays earned a major step forward in snagging the final wild card spot in the AL by securing a series win against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Toronto beat Boston 6-4 on Wednesday. The victory gave the Blue Jays also beat the Red Sox 2-1 on Monday and 5-3 on Tuesday.

Toronto will have the opportunity to sweep Boston in the series finale at 3:07 p.m. ET on Thursday at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

With Wednesday's victory against the Red Sox, the Blue Jays are now 1.5 games out of the final wild card spot in the AL. The Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians are all ahead of Toronto.

Following their series finale against the Red Sox, the Blue Jays will continue their run through the gauntlet of the American League East with three more series against divisional opponents. They'll have a three-game set against the New York Yankees, another three games against the Tampa Bay Rays and have another series against the Yankees to close out their competition through the division.

Toronto will get some assistance out of the bullpen for this run with the arrival of recently-acquired reliever Paul Sewald, who will report to the team ahead of the first series against New York.

If the Blue Jays are able to post a winning record in their four series against AL East rivals, there's a chance they could have a hold of a wild card spot at the end of it.
