The landscape of high school sports is shifting as several leagues prepare for the upcoming seasons, particularly in fall sports and high school football. As conference play commences, many teams will find themselves in new alignments that could impact their competitive outlook.
For the 2026-27 academic year, the Metro Athletic Conference will see changes with the addition of three schools: Cuyahoga Falls and Kent Roosevelt, both moving from the Suburban League American Conference, and Tallmadge, also joining from the SLAC. This will bring the total number of schools in the Metro Athletic Conference to ten. However, Coventry will be exiting the conference, which could alter the competitive balance within this league.
Looking ahead to the 2027-28 season, the Greater Portage Athletic Conference will expand significantly with the addition of eight new schools. This includes Crestwood, which is transitioning from the Chagrin Valley Conference, and Garrettsville Garfield from the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Grey. Other newcomers include Mogadore, Ravenna, Rootstown, Southeast, Springfield, and Waterloo, all of which will bring fresh competition to the conference.
The Principals Athletic Conference is also making adjustments, adding Coventry from the Metro Athletic Conference, which will bring the total to eight schools. This change may enhance the competitive nature of the Principals Athletic Conference, as teams adjust to the new lineup.
In the Suburban League, the National Conference will see Highland joining from the SL American Conference, while the American Conference will add two schools from the National Conference. This restructuring aims to balance the competition and provide more equitable matchups across the board. Notably, Brecksville will participate in the National Conference for all sports except football, where they will compete in the American Conference.
Meanwhile, the City Series, Federal League, and North Coast Conference will remain unchanged for the upcoming year, maintaining their current school lineups. The City Series includes six schools such as Buchtel and East, while the Federal League consists of seven schools, including Canton McKinley and GlenOak. The North Coast Conference retains its eight schools, including Benedictine and Beaumont.
As these changes take effect, schools and their athletic programs will need to adapt to new rivals and potentially different levels of competition. The adjustments reflect a broader trend in high school sports where teams are often realigned to foster competitive balance and enhance the overall experience for student-athletes.
