Hits Keep Coming for Battered Cardinals as Outfielder Goes on 10-Day IL; Ramon Urias Returns

Continuing to take hits on an 11-game, three-city road trip that has battered them – both physically and in the standings – the Cardinals placed outfielder Everson Pereira on the 10-day Injured List and recalled infielder Ramon Urias on Sunday.

Pereira, who was recently claimed off waivers from the White Sox and has shown incredible defensive prowess in left and center field, was placed on the Injured List with a bruised left hand. He was hit on the back of the hand by a 96.6 mph sinker from Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering in the eighth inning of Friday night’s 7-6 loss in 10 innings.

INF Ramón Urías has been activated from the 60-day IL.

Pereira was unable to grip a bat on Saturday and did not play in the Cardinals’ 12-3 loss to the Phillies. Standout shortstop Masyn Winn, who injured his thumb on a head-first slide into second on Wednesday in Cincinnati, has been out of the starting lineup the past three games because of the pain he feels when trying to grip a bat.

Pitchers Andre Pallante (right elbow inflammation) and Hunter Dobbins (right forearm tightness) were both placed on the 15-day Injured List after suffering injuries during the Cardinals’ longest road trip of the season. Pallante and Dobbins are the Cardinals’ first starting pitchers to go on the IL with arm injuries since Sonny Gray was moved there as a precautionary move in September of 2024.

Pallante, a 12-game winner and a feel-good story for how he has bounced back from a disastrous 2025 season, surrendered a season-worst 10 hits and was pulled after just 88 pitches in Monday’s Game 2 loss to the Reds. When his pain persisted, he was placed on the IL on Friday. Dobbins, who was bothered with forearm pain during Friday’s game, was pulled after one pitch of the fifth inning and he was placed on the IL on Saturday.

Rookie left-hander Quinn Mathews started in place of Pallante on Saturday night and surrendered 10 hits and seven runs in the first three innings. He ultimately retired eight of the final nine batters he faced and worked five innings to help save a fatigued bullpen.

Pereira was unable to continue after being hit on the hand in Friday's eighth inning. AS it turned out, the game was decided in the 10th inning when Cardinals' utility fielder Jose Fermin was unable to haul in Alec Bohm's drive to deep center field and two runs scored in the bottom of the 10th inning for a Phillies win. Pereira, whose hand X-rays came back negative, has hit .278 with a 430-foot homer in 11 games with the Cardinals.

What a way to end the game 😮

Urias, 32, made the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster and he appeared in 25 games early in the season while splitting time with third baseman Nolan Gorman. He hit just .158 with three doubles, two homers and five RBI in 57 at bats.

The former Gold Glove winner was placed on the 10-day Injured List on May 5 with right elbow lateral epicondylitis, more commonly known as “tennis elbow.” Then, during a rehab assignment to Triple-A Memphis, he suffered a setback in his recovery. Then, during a second rehab assignment, Urias injured his left elbow in similar fashion and was moved to the 60-day Injured List.

In 16 games at Triple-A Memphis, Urias has hit .184 with a double, two homers and six RBI.
