As the Holy Cross Crusaders gear up for their next challenge, the developing partnership between junior quarterback David Lynch and wide receiver Myles Abernathy is drawing attention. The duo has been working hard to establish their on-field chemistry since Lynch transferred from the University of Pittsburgh to Holy Cross.
In late July, just before the start of preseason camp, Lynch took the initiative to invite Abernathy and several other wide receivers to his family home in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. This gathering was designed to foster camaraderie away from the pressures of football. "That was a great experience, bonding with him and the other receivers," Abernathy reflected. "We were just at his house, taking our minds off football and taking that time to know each other." The bonding experience proved fruitful, as both players discovered a mutual appreciation for music, particularly the artist Drake.
After competing for the starting position, Lynch emerged victorious over senior Cal Swanson and made his debut for Holy Cross in their season opener against Lehigh. Although the Crusaders fell short, losing 35-10, Lynch showcased his potential by completing 25 of 40 passes for 313 yards and a touchdown. Abernathy, who had not played in two years while at Georgia State, made a significant impact with nine receptions for 129 yards.
"There were so many positive moments from so many guys," Lynch commented after the game. He emphasized the importance of growth, stating, "This group is still coming together, and I think there is a lot we can improve on and build off of. Myles is so dynamic, and we have a lot of receivers like that. I’m excited for the whole room." Abernathy echoed these sentiments, expressing his eagerness to contribute after a long hiatus from competitive play. "I thought I would be nervous, but I was more anxious to get out there and play. More than anything, it felt great being back out on the field," he said.
Abernathy's performance against Lehigh included a standout 37-yard reception, where he outjumped a defender, and a 24-yard catch that set up the team's only touchdown. His rapport with Lynch is growing, with Abernathy noting, "(Lynch) trusts me. He told me if there is any situation where there’s a lot of pressure, he trusts me to go up and get the ball, and I feel like that means a lot to hear from your quarterback."
The connection between Lynch and Abernathy has been fostered by Holy Cross's coaching staff, particularly assistant head coach Rich Gunnell, who recognized Abernathy's potential when he entered the transfer portal.
