A national stage awaits Howard and Alabama A&M as they open their 2026 seasons Saturday in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.
While both teams finished with losing records last year, they have plenty of reason for optimism entering the new campaign.
The Bison (5-7 in 2025) begin a new era under coach Ted White, their legendary former quarterback who set numerous records during his time as a player in D.C. His opposite number with the Bulldogs is Sam Shade, who followed a stellar playing career at Alabama with a long run in the NFL.
Shade led A&M to a 4-8 record last season in his first year in charge in Huntsville. He'll have veteran leadership under center with 26-year-old Cornelious Brown IV set to start at QB in his fourth season at A&M and eighth year as a college player.
Howard also has a pair of graduate students as options at quarterback in Ja'Shawn Scroggins and Hampton transfer Isaiah Freeman.
