The New York Mets are blessed with two of the best play-by-play announcers in baseball in Howie Rose and Gary Cohen. And on Tuesday night, they shared the booth together in a rare joint appearance.

Rose announced back in March that he was retiring after this season. He has reduced his WCBS radio schedule to working home games and the team’s Subway Series against the Yankees after battling bladder cancer. The iconic voice has been a fixture in New York sports for over three decades, calling both the Mets and New York Islanders.

Television announcer Gary Cohen is equally beloved for his work with the franchise calling games on SNY alongside Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez, forming one of the consensus best broadcast teams in baseball. The two worked alongside each other in the Mets radio booth in 2004 and 2005 after the retirement of legendary voice Bob Murphy before they became settled in their now-famous roles. But it’s rare that Cohen and Rose are seated next to each other in the same booth.

That’s why Mets fans were in for a treat on Tuesday night when Howie Rose joined the SNY broadcast to join his longtime friend and fellow announcer. After the Mets hosted the Padres on Tuesday night, SNY planned to air a documentary about Rose and his career in New York sports.

As Rose exited the booth, the pairing shared a handshake and a hug with Cohen telling Rose, “I’ve never had a brother, but you’re the closest thing and I treasure you.”

Even if you are not a fan of the New York Mets, that’s a very special moment given what both men have meant to baseball over the years and how well-respected they are by their peers and how well-loved they are by their fans, viewers, and listeners. And if you are a fan of the Mets, it’s going to stand as one of your most cherished moments that you could ever witness.
