NFL analyst Ian Rapoport thinks that the Kansas City Chiefs are building a younger defense for the next chapter of Patrick Mahomes‘ career. The focus goes beyond replacing players in the secondary.
Speaking on NFL Network, Rapoport highlighted the broader defensive changes while pointing to several young players. He said that Kansas City can repeat its previous roster-building success.
“They’re not just revamping their secondary. They are revamping a lot of their defense,” Rapoport said.

Rapoport specifically identified cornerback Mansoor Delane as a key piece. The Chiefs selected Delane early (Round 1, Pick No. 6) in the 2026 NFL Draft, giving the defense another young building block.
“This really brings me back to four years ago after they traded Tyreek Hill,” Rapoport said. “They said, you know what? We’re going to take all those draft picks and all the money.”
That approach helped Kansas City rebuild around Mahomes without abandoning its championship ambitions. Rapoport sees a similar plan taking shape now.
“They did it. And it was a great draft class,” Rapoport said. “The Chiefs got back to where they needed to be by drafting really good players, and they played immediately. If they can do that, the Chiefs are going to be more than fine.”

Mahomes missed significant time with a knee injury, while Kansas City’s defense also needed changes.
Rapoport thinks that the young talent can give the unit a new identity. He mentioned Delane alongside defensive tackle Peter Woods and edge rusher Mason Thomas.
“If they can get Delane, Peter Woods, another first-rounder who has been really, really promising, our Mason Thomas, their edge second-rounder, really quick first step,” Rapoport said. He also highlighted Omar Norman-Lott, who missed last season with an ACL injury.

The offensive side also gives Kansas City reason for optimism. Mahomes remains the centerpiece, while the Chiefs added running back Kenneth Walker III to strengthen their rushing attack.
“Offensively, hopefully for them, we’re going to be back to what they should be,” Rapoport said.
The defensive rebuild could ultimately determine how much pressure falls on Mahomes. If the young players develop fast, Kansas City can build a stronger roster around its franchise quarterback.
“This can be the young defense that they can build around as they get toward the next act of Mahomes’ career,” Rapoport said.
