The IberCup x ECNL International Soccer Tournament commenced on Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina, uniting more than 160 youth soccer teams from six continents. This marks the first time Raleigh has hosted this prestigious event, which showcases talented players aged 10 and 11 from various countries.
According to Bryan Bachelder, the youth director of administration for North Carolina FC (NCFC), the tournament features a diverse group of boys’ teams. "It features 160+, ten- and 11-year-old kids, boy's teams, spanning across six continents," he explained, highlighting the global nature of the competition.
As players, coaches, and organizers gathered for the tournament, they faced significant challenges posed by the extreme heat typical of Labor Day weekend. Many participants noted that the high temperatures have influenced the pace and strategy of the games. Warren Jordan, a player from the NCFC Pre-Academy North Team, shared his experience, stating, "It was really hot. And we made a ton of substitutions. Like, every 5 or 6 minutes." He also expressed a preference for grass fields over turf, citing the excessive heat generated by synthetic surfaces.
In response to the sweltering conditions, tournament organizers have implemented several safety measures to protect the young athletes. Bachelder mentioned that adjustments include delaying matches and rescheduling games to later time slots as the sun sets. Coaches have also adapted their strategies by shortening playing intervals and increasing the frequency of substitutions to minimize players' exposure to the heat.
Cory Elenio, the coach of the NCFC Pre-Academy North team, emphasized the importance of hydration and recovery for his players. "In a normal game, players are playing up to 30, 40 minutes at a time straight. I think out here, we’ve been kind of going for 5 or 6 minutes. So, it’s been an adjustment," he said. Elenio encouraged his players to focus on hydration and proper nutrition after their matches, especially following their two games on Friday.
Despite the challenges posed by the weather, players expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to compete against international teams. Jordan reflected on his experience, saying, "I’m really happy right now. It’s a great environment. I like to see how I’m playing against teams from other states and stuff like that." This sentiment captures the spirit of the tournament, as young athletes come together to showcase their skills and learn from one another.
The IberCup x ECNL International Soccer Tournament is set to conclude on Monday, with the championship match scheduled to kick off at 8 a.m., promising an exciting finish to a weekend filled with competitive youth soccer.
