In a significant development for women's cricket, India has been awarded the hosting rights for the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy, which is set to take place in 2027. This prestigious tournament, originally slated to be held in Sri Lanka, will be held from February 14 to 28, 2027, and is poised to enhance India's reputation as a leading venue for international cricket.
The tournament will showcase six of the world's top women's cricket teams, competing in the T20I format across a total of 16 matches. The qualified teams include India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka, all of which secured their spots based on the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings.
Matches will be held at two prominent venues: the Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium. The tournament format will consist of a round-robin league stage, where all six teams will compete, followed by a final that will see the top two teams vying for the championship title.
The decision to relocate the tournament from Sri Lanka was influenced by governance issues within Sri Lanka Cricket. The ICC Board's evaluation process revealed concerns regarding the presence of a government-appointed committee overseeing Sri Lanka Cricket, which is viewed as a breach of ICC regulations that prohibit political interference in cricket administration. As a result, India emerged as the preferred host, having outbid proposals from Bangladesh and South Africa.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed enthusiasm about the tournament, stating, “The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 marks an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket.” He emphasized the importance of this inaugural event in bringing together elite teams for a high-stakes competition, which will not only elevate the status of women's cricket but also motivate teams to strive for excellence in the rankings.
Shah further outlined the ICC's commitment to establishing a consistent and dynamic calendar for women's international cricket, with plans for marquee events occurring annually. “With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency, and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players, and its fans around the world,” he noted.
The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy is expected to be a landmark event in the evolution of women's cricket, offering a platform for the best female cricketers to showcase their talents on an international stage. As the countdown to 2027 begins, anticipation is building for what promises to be a thrilling competition.
