As India gears up to defend its gold medal in cricket at the Asian Games, the team will kick off its campaign in the quarterfinals on September 28. A highly anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan could follow just days later, setting the stage for thrilling competition.
The venue for this year’s cricket matches is the newly established Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. This facility, which has transformed three baseball grounds into a cricket venue, promises to deliver an exciting experience for both players and fans alike.
One of the most notable improvements at Korogi Sports Park is the dimensions of the playing field. The shortest boundary measures 65 meters, significantly longer than the smaller ground used during the Hangzhou Asian Games four years ago. Adam Birss, the technical operations manager for cricket at the Asian Games, explained that the ability to create a new ground from scratch allowed organizers to utilize more space, enhancing the overall playing conditions.
In preparation for the event, the Asian Cricket Council collaborated with Sri Lanka Cricket, enlisting Asitha Wijayasinghe, the curator from Kandy’s Pallekele International Stadium, to assist with pitch preparation. Given Pallekele's reputation for high-scoring matches, expectations are high that the Nisshin facility will also yield plenty of runs, contrasting sharply with the challenges faced at the T20 World Cup 2024, where teams struggled to reach even 125 runs at a makeshift venue in Nassau County, New York.
The Korogi Sports Park features four traditional turf pitches alongside a hybrid pitch that combines natural clay and synthetic fibers. This innovative technology, already in use in countries like Australia and Sri Lanka, aims to provide a faster playing surface while being more resilient to wear and tear. Birss noted, "The construction allows us to prepare a faster pitch. It is also more forgiving in terms of wear and tear." The local clay used in the pitch is expected to offer both bounce for fast bowlers and grip for spinners, further enhancing the competitive edge of the matches.
However, one of the primary concerns for the organizers is the potential impact of typhoons, which are common in Japan during the time of the Games. Effective drainage is crucial to ensure that matches can proceed as scheduled. Birss confirmed that the ground has been reinforced with a sand base to improve water absorption, although he acknowledged that the drainage system may not match the standards of the world's best facilities due to budget constraints.
As the Asian Games approach, all eyes will be on India’s cricket team as they navigate this new venue, which promises to offer an exciting and challenging environment for their quest to retain the gold medal.
