Injury Updates for Saints' Alvin Kamara and Cameron Jordan Ahead of Week 1

As the New Orleans Saints gear up for their Week 1 clash against the Detroit Lions, concerns loom over the status of two of the team's veteran stars, Alvin Kamara and Cameron Jordan. Both players are crucial to the Saints' success, and their potential absence could significantly impact the team's performance.

Head coach Kellen Moore addressed the media on Monday, revealing that while he is not ready to definitively rule out either Kamara or Jordan, he also refrained from providing any assurances regarding their participation in the season opener. This uncertainty comes as the Saints look to establish a strong start to the 2026 NFL season.

Alvin Kamara has been recovering from a sprained MCL, which he sustained during a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on August 18. Initial assessments suggested that he might be sidelined for four to six weeks, raising questions about his readiness for the Lions. Meanwhile, Cameron Jordan has been nursing a hamstring injury that he sustained earlier in training camp, and neither player participated in the preseason, further complicating their return.

When pressed about the likelihood of Kamara and Jordan playing in the opener, Moore expressed a cautious outlook. He stated, “We’ll see how this week goes. We’ll probably have a better idea at the beginning of next week. We’ll have a couple of practices this week, and then next week we should have a good idea, honestly, of what workload those guys are able to do. That will project us into what Week 1 will look like.”

Moore clarified that any rehabilitation work Kamara and Jordan are undergoing is not taking place on the field, indicating that the Saints are being particularly careful with their recovery. The coaching staff will closely monitor their progress to determine if there is sufficient time to prepare them for the upcoming matchup against Detroit.

If Kamara can return for the opener, it would significantly enhance the Saints' backfield, which is expected to feature Travis Etienne Jr. and Kendre Miller in his absence. Similarly, Jordan’s return would be a substantial boost to the Saints' defensive line, where he led the team with 10.5 sacks last season, showcasing his importance to the defensive unit.

Fortunately for the Saints, they have sufficient depth at both the running back and defensive end positions, allowing them to avoid rushing either veteran back into action too soon. However, Moore's comments leave the door open for a potential return, with the beginning of next week likely serving as a critical checkpoint for both players as they aim to be ready for the season opener against the Lions.
