SEDGWICK, Kan. — The anticipation is building as the Inman Teutons prepare to visit the Sedgwick Cardinals this Friday night for KSN's inaugural Game of the Week for the 2026 high school football season.
Last season, the Teutons showcased a strong performance, finishing with an impressive record. Key players Malachi Brunk and Korbyn McLellan are expected to be pivotal in leading the offense as they head into this challenging matchup in the Heart of America League.
Inman’s head coach, Lance Sawyer, expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the upcoming challenge. “They’re fast and physical. They play hard. The kids play tough. They’re really well coached. So they’ll be a tough battle for us week one,” Sawyer stated, highlighting the competitive nature of the Cardinals.
Brunk, a standout player for the Teutons, acknowledged the need for a solid defensive strategy against Sedgwick’s aerial attack. “We know they’re going to throw the rock around, so we should be getting everyone ready to see a lot of pass plays, and get our coverage ready as best we can for this week,” he said, emphasizing the importance of preparation.
On the other side of the field, the Cardinals are gearing up for their season opener under new head coach Doug Mabry, who is stepping into the role after years as an assistant. Mabry’s focus during practice has been on the finer details, particularly as former offensive lineman and tight end Henry Morse transitions to the quarterback position.
Last year, the Cardinals faced a tough loss against the Teutons, suffering a 61-24 defeat. This time around, Sedgwick is determined to turn the tables and secure a victory. “I think the preparation has been fantastic. I think we’re getting a good look, and we’re trying our best to get up to speed and work on all the little things,” Morse commented, highlighting the team’s commitment to improvement.
Mabry added that discipline will be crucial for the Cardinals as they aim for a successful outcome. “It’s going to be really important for us to be able to read our keys and stay really disciplined on the defensive side. And then, you know, we’re going to have to be able to be athletic on the offensive side and be able to make some plays out there,” he noted, reflecting on the areas that need enhancement compared to last season.
The matchup between the Inman Teutons and Sedgwick Cardinals promises to be an exciting clash as both teams look to establish themselves early in the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Sedgwick High School, and fans are eager to see how the game unfolds.
