Insider on Kyler Murray as Vikings QB: 'This was his job to lose'

The Vikings quarterback battle did not even make it to the first preseason game. After weeks of build-up, OTAs, and training camp practices, we have now arrived at a decision on the starter by head coach Kevin O'Connell.

On Tuesday, the Minnesota Vikings named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback for the start of the regular season. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news of the decision.

Following the news of that decision, several insiders were sharing what they knew and had on the team's quarterback battle. For ESPN's Peter Schrager, he hinted that this was always "his job to lose."

While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Schrager shared, "The second Kyler Murray was added as a free agent in Minnesota this was his job to lose..Kevin O'Connell wanted him on this team and he thinks he can get them over the hump"

With Murray being named the starter, he will be the fourth starter for the team in as many years. Going back to 2023 they have gone through Kirk Cousins, Sam Darnold, and J.J. McCarthy before now arriving at Murray. The Vikings hope he will be able to replicate the play of Darnold that they enjoyed in 2024.
