All eyes have been on Iowa's quarterback battle throughout the offseason. While that position has captured all the headlines, one transfer wide receiver is putting on a show during camp.
Third-year transfer wide receiver Tony Diaz has stolen the show and people's attention throughout the summer. After a strong 2025 season with UT-Rio Grande Valley where he had 881 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, there was real excitement about what he could do in Iowa City. That excitement has turned into true hype as Diaz continues to impress in camp.
On3 is the latest outlet to officially hop on the hype train for Diaz. Pete Nakos wrote about his top 20 under-the-radar transfers that are impressing in fall camp, including Diaz with the Hawkeyes.
The Hawkeyes believe they have found a top contributor to their offense in Diaz, a Texas-Rio Grande Valley transfer. Described to On3 as a “freak show,” Diaz has put together a strong fall camp and “does something absolutely ridiculous every practice.” The 5-foot-10, 184-pound receiver was limited in the spring but has burst onto the scene in fall camp. He posted 881 receiving yards last season at the FCS level. - Pete Nakos, On3
Diaz seems primed to start for Iowa alongside Reece Vander Zee and Dayton Howard in the wide receiver room. That position group has produced mixed results over the past few years, with many feeling ultimately disappointed by the end-of-season output. Diaz's offseason performance provides genuine excitement about the wide receiver position for the first time in a few years.
While it's great to see Diaz turning heads in camp, he and the Iowa offense as a whole will be judged by what happens in the regular season. With offensive coordinator Tim Lester entering his third season at the helm, this is a big season for that unit. Diaz will be a major piece for Lester to use to help his offense reach another level in 2026.
