Longtime sports commentator Jason Whitlock has long been a critic of Angel Reese, going as far as to call her a “comedy show” and the “most unskilled alleged star we’ve ever seen” on separate occasions. However, he seems to have changed his tune.
After back-to-back dominant performances from Reese, Whitlock went from criticizing Reese to praising her, calling her “a competitor” and saying she “got that dog in her.”
Whitlock Previously Criticized ReeseBack in May, Whitlock unloaded on Reese during his podcast, claiming that the only reason Reese was famous was that she infamously trolled Caitlin Clark during the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship when she did the “You Can’t See Me” gesture and pointed to her ring finger.
“That’s why Angel Reese is famous,” Whitlock said on his podcast back in May. “Had she not trolled Caitlin Clark while they were in college, everyone would be aware of and talking about Angel Reese is the most brutal basketball player we’ve ever seen.”
“The most unskilled alleged star we’ve ever seen,” Whitlock said of Reese. “She shoots the ball from her waist. She’s not trying to get better as an offensive player or a skilled basketball player.”
Then, just last week, Whitlock criticized Reese again.
“Good lord they have gone overboard trying to convince us Angel Reese is great. Stop it,” he wrote in a post on X
When a fan pushed back on Whitlock’s criticism of Reese, he acknowledged that she is a “great rebounder” while bringing up her struggles on the offensive side of the ball.
“She’s a great rebounder. Atlanta is gonna lose this game because the Dream have treated Reese like she’s Moses Malone on the offensive end. She’s not,” Whitlock wrote.
Whitlock then followed up that take with a rather blunt assessment of Reese’s game.
“Angel Reese is a comedy show,” he wrote.
Whitlock Changes His MindThis week, however, Reese did enough to change Whitlock’s mind.
On Thursday night, Reese nearly had a triple-double in a 124-88 win over the Los Angeles Sparks with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. However, the standout stat of the night was her shooting. Reese has been heavily criticized for her shooting over the years as she has never been a very efficient scorer. On Thursday, however, Reese was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field.
Reese followed that up with an even more dominant performance on Saturday night as she had a career-high 31 points with 14 rebounds to help lead her team to a 99-89 victory over the Phoenix Mercury.
With that, Whitlock officially changed his mind on Reese, naming her the league’s player of the week.
“Your WNBA Player of the Week finishes with 31 points and 14 rebounds. Angel Reese is a COMPETITOR. She will figure out a way to be effective no matter how much we make fun of her. Reese is a competitor. Got that dog in her,” Whtilock wrote in a post on X.
Clearly, Whitlock was impressed with what he saw from Reese this week, even if he has been critical in the past.
