In a significant blow to the Indian cricket team, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been officially ruled out of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka due to ongoing recovery from a left knee injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced this decision on Monday, confirming Bumrah's absence as he continues to rehabilitate.
Bumrah, who suffered the injury while fielding during a One-Day International against England in Cardiff back in July, was initially included in the squad with the hope that he would pass a final fitness test. He has been undergoing treatment at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, but persistent discomfort in his knee has ultimately led to his withdrawal from the squad.
Stepping into Bumrah's shoes is uncapped fast bowler Auqib Nabi, who has been named as his replacement. At 29 years old, Nabi is set to make his senior international debut after an impressive run in domestic cricket, where he has taken 104 wickets over the last two Ranji Trophy seasons. His standout performance in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, where he claimed 60 wickets, was instrumental in helping Jammu and Kashmir secure their first title.
Nabi's rise through the ranks has been noteworthy, as he also represented India A during their tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year, taking six wickets across two first-class matches. His selection marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to earn a call-up to the senior Test side.
In addition to Bumrah's absence, the BCCI has indicated that the participation of batter Sai Sudharsan is still contingent upon receiving fitness clearance. This adds another layer of uncertainty as the team prepares for the upcoming series.
