New York Giants’ rookie sixth-round pick, J.C. Davis, played all 81 snaps at left tackle for the New York Giants in Saturday’s 26-3 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Davis was the highest-graded Giants’ offensive player, and he has yet to surrender a pressure in 102 offensive snaps (46 pass-blocking snaps).
Davis spoke to the New York media on Monday. Davis opened by discussing the heat; he said the last time he played a game this hot was when he played for New Mexico, prior to his two seasons at Illinois.
“I think it was a great opportunity for the coaches to see my ability, what I could do at left tackle, and I think it went pretty good,” Davis said. “Of course, I’ve got things to improve on, but overall, it was a good game. We got the win. That was the most important thing.”
Davis recently moved from taking reps exclusively with the third team to getting second-team reps. He said the message from the coaching staff has been “just keep working.”
Davis is learning from start left tackle Andrew Thomas.
“As far as watching them, just seeing how different it is – from being that guy at Illinois almost, but he’s that guy in the NFL,” Davis said. “He does way different stuff than me, but I’m trying to pick up and learn from him and pick off stuff that he does. Some stuff can’t do what he does; that’s him.”
The Giants now have two swing-tackles in J.C. Davis and Marcus Mbow, both who could possibly also be considered for guard play. In the case of Davis, though, it would be a first. Davis looked impressive so far through two preseason games, and looks like an emerging depth piece for the Giants.
