Torquay United's manager, Jimmy Ball, has expressed the necessity for "difficult" changes within the club as they aim to break a 12-year absence from the English Football League. Currently, the Gulls find themselves in a precarious position, sitting 19th in the National League South after securing only one victory in their first six matches.
The team's recent performance has been disappointing, highlighted by a 2-0 loss to Farnham Town on Bank Holiday Monday. This defeat has compounded the pressure on Ball, who took over managerial duties in March, succeeding Paul Wotton. The Gulls have struggled to find their footing this season, and Ball acknowledges that the club has faced considerable disruption during the summer transfer window.
Ball pointed to the challenges posed by players being "turned" by other clubs, which has affected the squad's overall commitment and performance. He emphasized the importance of having players who are fully dedicated to the club, stating that he expects them to "sacrifice and give everything" for Torquay United.
Reflecting on the team's recent history, Ball noted that Torquay has come close to returning to league football in the past two seasons, finishing third and second respectively, but ultimately falling short in the playoffs. Last season, the Gulls lost 3-2 to Hornchurch in the playoff final, a bitter disappointment for a club with aspirations of rejoining the Football League.
"The truth is it has been a long time since Torquay have played league football, and yes, the last two seasons have been close, but it’s ultimately failed," Ball remarked. He acknowledged the challenges associated with implementing change, recognizing that progress may be slower than desired but is nonetheless essential for the club's future.
When asked about the concerns of fans regarding the team's slow start, Ball remained calm, stating, "I don’t know of any scenario when panicking is beneficial." He admitted that while the start to the season is not acceptable, the disruptions behind the scenes have played a significant role in the team's current struggles.
Ball expressed a desire to be transparent with fans but noted the complexities involved in the situation. He stated, "You have to deal with it the best you can and hope the men you’re putting out on to the pitch are 100% committed to Torquay United Football Club." The Gulls will have an opportunity to turn their fortunes around as they prepare to host third-placed Folkestone Invicta this Saturday, a team that remains unbeaten in their opening five matches.
