We're on to Day 30 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener, so we're going back to 1989 for the Saints Play of the Day. The Saints finished this season strong with a 41-6 win over the Indianapolis Colts -- a team that went into it with the same 8-7 record as the black and gold. The "Dome Patrol" defense held the Colts to a couple of field goals early on, and then it was all New Orleans in the second half. John Fourcade's 30-yard touchdown pass to tight end Hoby Brenner opened up the fourth quarter. You can see it for yourself right here.
Fourcade dropped back to pass and had to leave the pocket under pressure from Colts defensive end Donnell Thompson, throwing on the move to fling the ball from around Indy's 37-yard line to find Brenner wide open and 10 yards from the end zone. Brenner turned and hustled into the end zone for a score, but he could've walked in at his leisure.
This was Fourcade's second touchdown pass on the afternoon; he also ran for a score from two yards out with Brenner again running open in the end zone. His 291 passing yards were second-most in the NFL that week, trailing only Minnesota Vikings quarterback Wade Wilson's 303; Wilson would replace Fourcade a couple of years later as one of several passers who tried to bring New Orleans steady QB play. Even if this strong finish to the 1989 season proved to be more of a flash in the pan, Fourcade gave Saints fans something to cheer about at a time when they really needed it.
