In his sixth season at the helm, Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel celebrated a successful start as the team triumphed over Furman Paladins with a commanding score of 56-9 at Neyland Stadium on Saturday. This victory marks the Vols' first win of the 2026 season, improving their record to 1-0, while Furman falls to 1-1.
The Volunteers showcased a powerful offensive display, amassing a total of 638 yards throughout the game. Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon made an impressive debut, leading the charge for Tennessee's offense. The team’s defensive unit also performed admirably, limiting Furman to just 221 yards, which underscores a strong start to the season for the Volunteers.
In his post-game remarks, Heupel expressed satisfaction with the performance but acknowledged that there is still room for improvement across all facets of the game. "Good start today," Heupel stated. "There’s a bunch that we are going to need to clean up here in all three phases of the game, but overall pleased with the performance. Defensively, we played extremely well. We don’t turn it over, it’s probably a shutout. Those guys have grown, worked and competed extremely hard to go play and start the season that way. Proud of the effort there from our staff and our players."
Heupel also pointed out that while the offense faced some early penalties that stalled drives, they eventually found their rhythm. "Offensively, the penalties early in the football game slowed a couple of drives down. After that, I thought we executed at a high level. Quarterbacks played smart and efficient today. All of them did, so good start. A lot to learn from and move on to a big one next week," he added.
Looking ahead, Tennessee is set to face Georgia Tech on September 12, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT. The Yellow Jackets will be looking for redemption after their own loss in Week 1, making this matchup a crucial early-season contest for both teams.
This season opener not only sets a positive tone for the Volunteers but also raises expectations as they aim for a successful campaign in the competitive landscape of college football. With a strong start under their belt, Tennessee will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next challenge against Georgia Tech.
