Boxing icon Julio César Chávez opens up about his remarkable life and career in the new docuseries titled "Chávez vs Chávez," available on ViX. Known as one of the greatest professional boxers in Mexican history, Chávez's journey is marked by determination and resilience, which he discusses candidly in this documentary series.

Chávez's life story is one of overcoming adversity. He reflects on his entry into boxing, stating, "When I got into boxing, it was out of necessity. I didn’t know I was going to be a world champion... But I had that desire to lift my family out of poverty, that hunger to be someone in life, to reach the highest peak... and that is exactly what happened." With a career record boasting 107 wins, 86 of which were by knockout, Chávez's achievements in the ring are unparalleled.

The docuseries, directed by Diego Enrique Osorno, is built on approximately 25 hours of interview footage collected over more than a month of filming across significant locations in Chávez's life, including Culiacán, Tijuana, Las Vegas, Mexico City, Madrid, and Guadalajara. It chronicles his rise from a childhood marked by poverty to the pinnacle of boxing fame, followed by a harrowing battle with addiction that nearly derailed his success.

In promoting the series, Chávez expressed a desire for viewers to understand the complexities of his life, stating, "I think it’s time for people to really know who Julio César Chávez is. How I reached the top, and then how I fell into the world of addiction right at my peak." He emphasizes the importance of sharing his story to inspire young athletes, noting, "Dreams are achieved through effort, dedication, perseverance, and hard work, but the most important thing is discipline."

Chávez's struggles with addiction began during the height of his career, a time when he felt isolated from his loved ones and surrounded by enablers. He candidly shares that he contemplated suicide during this dark period, stating, "I thought, ‘What am I doing in this world?’ For me, the easiest way out was ending my life. Thankfully, by the grace of God, here I am talking with you." His recovery journey has been ongoing, with Chávez celebrating 18 years of sobriety, though he acknowledges the daily challenges that come with it.

The documentary also delves into the impact of addiction on his family, including the struggles of his son, Julio César Chávez Jr., who has faced his own battles with substance abuse. Chávez reflects on the pain of witnessing his son's difficulties, which he describes as some of the hardest moments of his life. Despite these challenges, he believes that sharing his experiences serves a greater purpose: "I believe God gave me another chance at life to help other people who suffer from the same problem I do, and especially my children."

Chávez now operates four addiction treatment clinics across Mexico, where he shares his story with patients in crisis, hoping to provide them with the motivation to pursue their own recovery. He also engages with young people through motivational talks, emphasizing the harsh realities of addiction: "Only three things are going to happen to you in life when you have an addiction problem: prison, hospitals, and death. There’s nothing else."

As a fighter who has often had his story narrated by others, "Chávez vs Chávez" allows him to reclaim his narrative, sharing both the triumphs and tribulations of his life. The docuseries, produced by N+ Docs, premiered on September 11, featuring all five episodes streaming on ViX. Through this project, Chávez aims to inspire others while reflecting on the determination that not only propelled him to the top of the boxing world but also helped him rise from the depths of addiction.
