Since January, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has flirted with a win five times, only to settle for runner-up finishes. That changed last weekend when he finally secured his second PGA Tour title of the season at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Scheffler went full King Kong at TPC Southwind, dominating the field across all four rounds. Yet, former World No. 1 Justin Thomas believes Scheffler has somehow gone “unnoticed and unappreciated.”
“I think now there’s not really much talk of it anymore,” Thomas told Golf Channel about Scheffler’s latest performance. “Obviously, it’s incredibly impressive what he’s done the last couple of years, and yeah, there’s a part of me that really respects the kind of season that he has had in terms of [it being] tough.”
The two-time major champion also pointed to Scheffler’s dominance in the Player of the Year conversation over the past several years as further evidence of just how consistently elite he has been. Interestingly, Scheffler has won the award four consecutive times through 2025 and remains firmly in the conversation for the 2026 honor.
And even before Scheffler secured his 21st PGA Tour win, he had more than enough on his resume to warrant consideration. This year alone, the World No. 1 already had one win under her belt, along with 11 top-five finishes in 17 starts. He also leads the FedEx Cup standings with 4,873.333 points, 42.25% more than second-place Matt Fitzpatrick, who has 3,425.793.
The gap is even more pronounced in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Scheffler has 743 ranking points, 97.6% more than second-place Rory McIlroy’s 376. And Thomas believes it’s this sustained long-term dominance that has created an unusual problem: he has been so good, and for so long, that people have started taking his success for granted.
“He’s played a lot of unbelievable golf, to [the point] where his resume of all the top finishes shouldn’t go just kind of unnoticed and unappreciated,” he added. “But I think when he goes and wins by that much at this point … it’s not as jaw-dropping as maybe it once was.”
The New Jersey native’s dominance is so remarkable that even if he finishes dead last at the BMW Championship, the second playoff event before the Tour Championship, he would still remain inside the top 30 and qualify for the season-ending event. For now, the World No. 1, who has spent a remarkable 200 total weeks atop the rankings, is turning his attention to his next challenge.
Scheffler will tee it up at the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club, beginning Thursday. With no cut at the event, he will have four rounds to add to his FedEx Cup points total and further strengthen his position heading into the Tour Championship. The season finale will be at East Lake Golf Club from August 26–30, with a massive $40 million purse up for grabs.
Still, only time will tell whether the 30-year-old can carry the momentum from his dominant performance at TPC Southwind into the final stretch of the season.
