Kara Lawson Evaluates Caitlin Clark's Impact Ahead of FIBA World Cup

As the FIBA World Cup approaches, Team USA coach Kara Lawson is keenly focused on the contributions of Caitlin Clark, the standout star from the Indiana Fever. Lawson recognizes Clark's unique ability to stretch the floor, which could be pivotal for the team's success in the international competition. However, she remains undecided about the specific minutes and roles for Clark as they prepare for the tournament.

During a media session on Tuesday, Lawson expressed that she is currently in a "fact-finding" mode, particularly regarding how Clark will be defended in FIBA play compared to her experiences in the WNBA. "She’s somebody that can change games, with her ability to create pace, her ability to score, play make, and so that’s something that is going to be a great fit for the personnel that we have on this team," Lawson stated, highlighting Clark's potential impact.

Lawson further elaborated on Clark's ability to draw attention on the court, noting, "You know, her ability to get going and get hot, and to stretch the floor, the spacing that she provides. The attention that she generally draws in the WNBA. We’ll see if that’s the same… We’ll have to see, since it’s her first time here, how people defend her; is it similar to what we see in the States, or is it a little bit different?" This inquiry into how international defenses may differ from those in the WNBA is crucial for Clark's integration into the team.

Caitlin Clark's previous experience at the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in March, where she was named the tournament MVP, adds to the intrigue. In that competition, she averaged 11.6 points and 6.4 assists while shooting an impressive 52.9% from the field, including 40.0% from beyond the arc. However, Lawson acknowledged that the level of competition at the World Cup will be significantly higher, and Clark will likely face more challenging defensive schemes.

Clark's performance in March came while she was still recovering from injuries, which makes her current readiness even more promising. Now, with the opportunity to play alongside experienced teammates like Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier—who were unavailable during the qualifiers—Clark is expected to take on a more significant role. This week, as the FIBA World Cup opener approaches, Clark appears to be in a much better place physically and mentally.

Having dealt with a series of injuries last year and a back issue this season, Clark's return to form is a testament to her resilience. She has shown remarkable improvement in her game, averaging 24.4 points, 9.4 assists, and 1.1 steals in August alone, while shooting 47.5% from the field and 40.8% from three-point range across 11 games. This includes six double-doubles, indicating her ability to contribute significantly on both ends of the court.

As Team USA gears up for the FIBA World Cup, all eyes will be on Caitlin Clark and how she adapts to the international stage. With Lawson's careful evaluation of her role and the defensive strategies she will face, Clark's performance could be a key factor in the team's pursuit of gold.
