In a significant development for the LSU women's basketball program, forward Kate Koval has announced her departure from the team. Koval's decision, made public through an Instagram post on September 2, stems from the recent addition of Russian center Anna Minaeva to the Lady Tigers' roster, a move that has deeply affected Koval on a personal level.
Koval, who hails from Ukraine, expressed her concerns regarding the implications of this roster change, especially given her family's ties to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Her father, Oleksandr Koval, serves as a drone operator in the Ukrainian military, which has been engaged in a prolonged conflict with Russia. In her statement, Koval emphasized that the war is not an abstract concept for her; it is a harsh reality that has claimed the lives of people close to her and has devastated her hometown.
“My father serves in the Ukrainian military and takes tremendous pride in defending his country against Russian aggression,” Koval wrote. “For me, this war is not distant or abstract. People close to me have been killed and wounded in Russian attacks, and places where I grew up and first began playing basketball have been destroyed by missile strikes.”
Koval's departure from LSU was officially noted on August 24, when she cited personal reasons for her exit. Initially, she had intended to return for the 2026-27 season, but the signing of Minaeva prompted her to reevaluate her position within the program. Koval acknowledged that while she understands the nature of roster decisions in college basketball, she felt compelled to act in accordance with her values and personal beliefs.
“The timing of this situation and the deeply personal effect it has had on me, my family, and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me,” she stated. Koval had previously averaged 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in the last season, showing promise as a valuable player for the Tigers.
In her post, Koval also revealed that she had planned to continue her collegiate career at LSU until the unexpected roster changes occurred. She was informed of the decision to add Minaeva shortly after the transfer portal closed in April, which complicated her options for continuing her basketball journey.
