Keenan Allen Arrested on OWI Allegations Hours After Colts Preseason Debut

Keenan Allen’s first game in an Indianapolis Colts uniform was followed hours later by an arrest in downtown Indianapolis.

The six-time Pro Bowl receiver was taken into custody early Sunday morning, August 30, after police said he was arrested on preliminary allegations involving operating while intoxicated. Jail records cited by TMZ Sports listed two misdemeanor allegations.

One entry involved operating while intoxicated while endangering another person. The other involved operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration of at least 0.08. Allen was arrested at approximately 1 a.m. and taken to the Marion County Arrestee Processing Center.

The arrest came less than 24 hours after Allen played in Indianapolis’ preseason finale against the Detroit Lions. He caught his only target for 24 yards in his first game action since joining the Colts.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report placed the incident in the 100 block of South Meridian Street, near the center of downtown Indianapolis. WRTV reported that online jail records showed two preliminary allegations: driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated while endangering a person.

NBC Sports reported that both allegations are misdemeanors and that Allen had not been formally charged at the time of its Sunday report.

Additional details about what led officers to stop Allen, whether anyone else was in the vehicle or what testing was conducted were not included in the initial reports.

The arrest came at the end of a day Allen had pushed to be part of. He joined Indianapolis late in the preseason and had missed most of training camp, but asked head coach Shane Steichen for a chance to play against Detroit.

On Indianapolis’ second offensive play, Anthony Richardson Sr. found Allen for a 24-yard gain. Allen played two more snaps before leaving after the opening drive, according to the Colts’ game recap.

“It was good,” Allen said after the game. “Get out there, get your feet wet, play against some competition other than your defense and just get back in the groove of things.”

Allen also said he wanted to feel game speed again and make sure his body was ready after limited practice time.

Indianapolis added Allen on August 19 as a veteran option for its receiving corps. The Colts’ official recap noted that he entered the preseason finale with 1,055 career receptions across 171 regular-season games.

The Colts acknowledged Sunday’s arrest but did not announce any discipline.

“We are aware of the incident involving Keenan Allen last night,” the team said in a statement reported by NBC Sports. “We are in the process of gathering more information and have no further comment at this time.”

Allen’s status with the team remained unchanged publicly as the first reports emerged. Indianapolis is scheduled to open the regular season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on September 13.
