As the high school football season unfolds, Kemon Spell, a senior at McKeesport, stands out as the top running back recruit in the nation. His reputation precedes him, with McKeesport Head Coach Tom Smith noting, "Probably everybody in the city knows of him, probably everybody in the tri-state area knows about him, and he just handles it perfectly. You would think he was just another player." Despite the accolades, Spell remains grounded, prioritizing hard work over the pressures of his status.
Spell's journey has not been without challenges. He committed to the University of Georgia in February after initially choosing Penn State but faced a significant setback last season when he missed five games due to an ankle injury. Reflecting on that time, Spell stated, "It was just a tough setting for me, being on the sideline. But I’m back healthy this year and we’re coming for it all." Even with the injury, he managed to rush for over 1,700 yards and score 32 touchdowns, showcasing his talent and determination.
His teammate, senior fullback Abe Miller, praised Spell's abilities, saying, "It’s crazy. A lot of times I’m out in space, lead blocking for him and there’ll be times I miss a block or I miss a key and he ends up in the end zone anyway." This kind of support from teammates is crucial as the Tigers aim for their first WPIAL Championship and state title in over two decades.
Motivation plays a significant role in Spell's life. He credits his late grandmother as his driving force, stating, "My grandma was my motivation. You know, every day I wake up, I’m feeling down. I feel like I can’t do something. I always throw some gospel music on for her because we always went to church together before she passed away." In tribute to her, he wears the number three on his jersey, which was her favorite number.
Spell's maturity and humility are evident as he navigates the pressures of being a top prospect. He acknowledges the expectations placed on him, especially during challenging games. "When we’re losing and it’s a tough game, you know, everybody’s depending on me, which they should, and I understand that," he explained. "But you know, it also puts a lot on me because I still have to worry about my assignment so everything else I got to do. That’s kind of where a leader has to step in."
Looking ahead, Spell is determined to lead the McKeesport Tigers to success, emphasizing the importance of this season. "It’s been since forever," he said. "Me and this team want to be the people to change it." With his talent, dedication, and leadership, Kemon Spell is poised to make a significant impact this season as he strives for glory with his team.
