LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky football held its initial game week press conference on Tuesday, featuring head coach Will Stein, followed by player interviews on Wednesday. Among the players available to the media was quarterback Kenny Minchey, who is gearing up for his first collegiate start this Saturday against Youngstown State.
As Minchey anticipates the opportunity to lead the Wildcats, he acknowledges the mix of excitement and nerves that accompany such a significant moment in his career. He shared that while he feels the typical pre-game jitters, he finds his rhythm after the first play. "After the first play, I think that’s when I tend to relax and breathe," Minchey remarked. He recalled similar feelings from his high school days, where he also experienced butterflies before games. His focus will be on maintaining high energy and executing plays effectively. "At the end of the day, I think it’s about how I’m going to execute this play and what my rules are for it," he added.
Coach Stein, in his first year at the helm, echoed Minchey’s sentiments regarding the natural nerves that come with being a first-time starter. He emphasized that perfection is not the expectation for Minchey; rather, the goal is to take it one play at a time. "There’s going to be butterflies. If you don’t feel that, then you’re probably not human, so that’s okay," Stein explained. He encouraged Minchey to embrace the moment without fear of failure. "Don’t be afraid to go play hard. He’s done it in practice, and that’s what he needs to do — just go out there and run the offense. We don’t need him to be Michael Jordan or Tom Brady; we need him to be Kenny Minchey, and we’ll be fine," Stein stated.
Before transferring to Kentucky, Minchey served as the second-string quarterback at Notre Dame, where he participated in 10 games over three seasons. During his time with the Fighting Irish, he completed 23 of 29 passes for a total of 212 yards. Now, as he steps into the starting role for the Wildcats, Minchey aims to translate his previous experience into impactful performances on the field.
This Saturday marks the beginning of a new chapter for Minchey and the Wildcats as they open their season at home against Youngstown State.
