BOSTON — Arizona Diamondbacks' second baseman Ketel Marte did not show up at Fenway Park on Monday, Aug. 17, and was placed on the restricted list shortly before the Diamondbacks’ game against the Boston Red Sox.
The restricted list means the player qualifies for "personal, legal or non-baseball reasons," according to MLB.com.
The roster move was made about 15 minutes before first pitch.
Marte traveled with the team to Boston on Sunday, Aug. 16. Team officials had been holding out hope until shortly before game time that he would show. He had been expected to serve as the club’s designated hitter.
Teams have the option of not paying players while they are on the restricted list. It is unclear if that is how the Diamondbacks will proceed.
Taking Marte’s place on the roster is infielder Jose Fernandez, who was already in Boston in the event the club needed to place third baseman Nolan Arenado on the injured list.
