Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has made the club’s goalkeeping hierarchy clear ahead of the new season: Manuel Neuer remains the undisputed No. 1, but Jonas Urbig will once again be given opportunities between the posts.
Kompany addressed the situation in an interview with MagentaTV, revealing that Bayern have already discussed the expected distribution of playing time with both goalkeepers internally.
“We communicated with Manu and with Jonas very clearly internally. That’s the most important thing,” Kompany said.
The Belgian coach stressed that Urbig will not simply be confined to the bench despite Neuer’s status as the first-choice goalkeeper. The 23-year-old is expected to continue receiving meaningful playing time throughout the campaign.
“Jonas will get his minutes again this season. That’s part of his development and hopefully his future with us,” Kompany explained.
At the same time, there is no ambiguity over who currently holds the top spot in the hierarchy.
“But Manu is our No. 1, that’s very clear. We’re happy with this situation,” Kompany added.
